To commemorate Monday’s 50th anniversary of John Glenn’s Mercury space flight – the first American manned mission to orbit the Earth – NASA and the Kennedy Space Center’s Visitor Complex are welcoming Glenn back, along with fellow Mercury 7 astronaut Scott Carpenter. Glenn, 90, and Carpenter, 86, who was the second American to orbit the Earth, are the last surviving members of the Mercury 7 astronaut corps that began America’s manned space flight program in the early 1960s.
